Five stars!”

Look for repeated comments about specific parts of the customer experience, such as:

• Reliability: Did the cleaners arrive when expected?
• Communication: Did the company respond quickly when the homeowner had a question?
• Quality: Do reviewers mention specific areas that were cleaned well?
• Consistency: Are customers reporting good experiences over several months?
• Problem resolution: When something went wrong, how did the company respond?

That last one matters. No cleaning company is going to execute every single job perfectly forever. A better indicator of professionalism is what happens when a customer raises a legitimate concern.

You should also read some of the company’s lower-rated reviews. One angry review does not automatically mean a company is bad, but patterns matter. If multiple customers independently mention missed appointments, poor communication or incomplete cleaning, pay attention.

3. Ask Exactly What Is Included in the Cleaning

This is one of the most important questions you can ask. “Deep cleaning” does not have one universal definition. Neither does “standard cleaning.” Two companies may advertise the exact same service while including completely different tasks.

Before paying a deposit or putting your card on file, ask for a cleaning checklist or detailed scope of work. A professional cleaning company should be able to explain what its cleaners are expected to clean. For example, a residential cleaning checklist might address things such as:

Google reviews are useful, but they are not the only place worth researching. Try searching Reddit as well. Communities such as r/CleaningTips contain discussions from homeowners, renters, professional cleaners and people who have hired cleaning services. Search questions such as:

• “What should a deep cleaning include?”
• “How much did you pay for a house cleaner?”
• “What should I ask before hiring a cleaning company?”
• “Cleaning company missed areas. What should I do?”

You will find people discussing what went well, what went badly and what they wish they had asked before booking. Reddit should not be treated as unquestionable expert advice. Individual experiences vary, and anonymous users can be wrong. But it can be useful for identifying recurring issues and questions that real customers encounter. Use it as another piece of information, not your only source.

5. Pay Attention to How Quickly the Company Communicates

The hiring process itself tells you a lot. If you request a quote and wait four days for a response, communication probably will not magically improve once the company has your money. Strong cleaning companies tend to have systems. You should receive clear information about things such as:

• Your appointment date
• Arrival expectations
• Pricing
• What service you purchased
• How to prepare for the cleaners
• How to contact the company
• Cancellation policies
• What happens if you are dissatisfied

Fast communication does not mean somebody has to answer the phone every second of the day. It means there is an organized process. That becomes especially important when you have cleaners entering your home.

6. Ask What Happens If You Are Not Satisfied

This question separates a lot of companies. Ask: “What happens if something is missed?” A reputable cleaning company should have an answer. Some companies offer a satisfaction guarantee and will return to address legitimately missed items if the customer contacts them within a certain period. Others may handle complaints differently. The exact policy can vary, but there should be a policy.

You do not want to discover after the cleaning that the company’s entire resolution process is essentially, “Sorry you feel that way.” Read the guarantee carefully. Find out how quickly concerns must be reported and whether photographs or other documentation are required.

7. Make Sure You Are Booking the Right Type of Cleaning

Sometimes homeowners think they need a standard cleaning when they actually need a deep cleaning. That creates frustration for everyone.

Standard Cleaning. Standard cleaning is generally better suited to homes that are already being maintained and primarily need routine upkeep. It may be appropriate for weekly, biweekly or recurring service.

Deep Cleaning. Deep cleaning usually involves more detailed attention to buildup and areas that are not addressed as heavily during routine maintenance. A home that has not been professionally cleaned recently may need a deep cleaning before transitioning into recurring standard service.

Move-Out Cleaning. Move-out cleaning is designed for an empty or nearly empty property being prepared for turnover. It may require additional attention to areas such as cabinets, drawers, appliances, closets and other spaces that become accessible once furniture and belongings are removed.

The names sound simple, but the included tasks still vary between companies. Always check the company’s individual cleaning checklist.
